Open MRI Machine

If you are currently in need of a MRI scan and have been researching the process of magentic resonance imaging scans you may have come across the term open MRI machine, or open sided MRI.

What Is An Open MRI Machine?

Open sided MRI scans work in exactly the same way as a normal scan: a magnetic field is directed at the patient which makes all of the protons in the body align, as they move back into position at different rates the computer reads the signal they emit and then interprets this in digital form.

In a traditional MRI machine the patient lies in position in a circular gap about 4 foot in diameter in the middle of a MRI machine. The space for the patient is very small and as such can be unsuitable for a large number of patients.

For this reason open MRI machines are becoming ever increasingly popular. Instead of having a small space for the patient to lie in for the duration of the scan they have magnets above and below the patient with no sides encapsulating the patient, hence the name open sided MRI. Because of this space on either side people find that open MRI scans are a much easier prospect to face compared to ‘bore’ type MRI machines.

Advantages Of Open Sided MRI Scans

There are numerous advantages of open MRI machines with the main reason being for claustrophobic patients. Because the person being scanned can see outside of the machine, which would be possible with a typical machine, the patient will not feel closed in and therefore be a lot more comfortable for the entire process.

Another useful application for open sided MRI scans is for children or elderly people that need comforting during the scan. They will be able to see, talk to or even hold the hands of their friends and family while the scan is taking place.

Larger people often have problems fitting into a normal machine or do not fit at all, therefore making them the only viable option for them.

Cost Of Open MRI Scans

Although the presence of and open MRI machine is becoming more frequent in hospitals and imaging centers they are still very much in the minority. As such you will have to pay a premium over a standard MRI cost but for many people the cost is worthwhile due to the discomfort that an open MRI will prevent.
